Capstone Health opened in June 2001 as a nurse-managed center and operated as a Certified Health Center with a goal to deliver family centered, quality primary health care to areas. This was made capable by the University of Alabama, Capstone College of Nursing, and Professor Dr. Jeri Dunkin; the initial funding was received from the Division of Nursing, Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services.
